NapSack Blanket by Calment Care

“It’s better than a backpack. It’s better than a cape. It’s just better than anything.” – Anonymous user

The Napsack not only has all of the same functions as a blanket, but it allows the user the luxury of mobility and stability in a set position.  A normal blanket will fall off the user and require the blanket to be readjusted, whereas by utilizing straps the Napsack will allow the user to walk, sit, or perform low movement activities like working in the office. The following features are provided to a Napsack user:

Basic Functions

  • Comfortability
  • Cozy
  • Washable
  • Easy to use
  • Fairly inexpensive

Unique Functions

  • Two points of contact along the neck line
    • Reduces tension around the neck and ensures the blanket wraps around the shoulders
  • Adjustable straps
    • Allows the user to customize the fit of the Napsack
  • Soft cozy side of the blanket
    • Allows for the user to know which side the blanket should be worn.
  • Foam Straps
    • Allows the Napsack to stay on the user, while not sacrificing any comfort.

Customer Research

We administered a market analysis survey to determine which features were desirable in a blanket. We received data from a total of 96 respondents, with 41 completions and 55 partial completions. From this survey, we gleaned a number of deeply profound insights into the mind of the average blanket consumer.  We found that, while softness, thickness, and durability are all desirable traits for a blanket material, softness was of extreme importance to our respondents. 81% of our respondents gave softness the highest desirability rating, while only 29% and 43% did the same for thickness and durability, respectively. This indicates that, while all three traits are important for our blanket, softness is of extreme importance to our potential users.

Napsack versus the Competition

Calment Care has analyzed these potential competitors using Quality Function Deployment. The QFD compares Napsack with the main wearable blanket competitor: Snuggie, as well as other blankets that satisfy unique needs, the same ones that Calment Care hopes to address among the elderly population, including: regular blanket, electric blanket, weighted blanket.

From the QFD, which can be seen on the next page, one of the main advantages of Napsack is that it is easy to fold, unlike the Snuggie or an electric blanket. The team attempted to create a blanket that was symmetric and did not require users to be able to know which blanket is the “top” part before they use it. The asymmetry of the blanket is a disadvantage as compared to a regular blanket. The Napsack is easier to wash and dry than a weighted or electric blanket.  It has much more adjustability in sizing than the Snuggie, as the only dimensions that matter are the length and width of the straps, which can easily be adjusted by the buckle.
